A Lukewarm Faith

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!” Revelation 3:15 (ESV)

A quiet danger sometimes enters the walk of some Christians long before they notice. It seldom shows up with a loud announcement; instead, this danger creeps in slowly, comfortably, through the back door, almost politely.

Scripture calls it “lukewarmness”—a faith that’s neither hot nor cold, neither vibrant nor fully resistant, neither boldly for Christ nor openly against Him. Completely in the middle.

In Revelation 3:16, Jesus speaks with striking clarity: “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”

These words weren’t a threat spoken in anger; they were a warning offered in love. They came from the One who desires His people to live with a fire matching the grace He freely offers them.

Many of us know what it feels like to drift into a lukewarm life. It begins innocently—a busy season that steals our time with God, a quiet compromise that dulls our convictions, a distraction crowding out prayer, or an excuse that minimizes sin.

It can be as simple as:

“Oh, I go to church, but I don’t study the Bible”

“I keep my faith to myself because it might make others uncomfortable”

“My life is so busy I don’t really the time to … (fill in the blank)”

Suddenly, the passion we once felt for Christ becomes comfortable routine. The flame becomes a flicker.

The Lord doesn’t expose our lukewarmness to shame us. He reveals it to invite us back.

The Subtle Drift

Paul writes in 2 Timothy 4:3–4 that a time will come when people “will not endure sound teaching” but instead “will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”

Whether we realize it or not, this temptation is always nearby. Culture constantly offers a softer gospel—one that asks little, costs nothing, and tolerates everything.

When we allow our faith to blend so easily into the world that there is no distinction between the two, we’re walking in lukewarmness. When our convictions bend to fit the expectations of others, we’re drifting.

God calls us to something better—not a harsh, rigid faith, but a faithful one grounded in His unchanging Word.

Jesus says in Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth.” Salt preserves. Salt seasons. Salt prevents decay. But Jesus also warns that if salt loses its saltiness, it becomes ineffective—good intentions without impact.

Lukewarm living takes away the intimacy of our faith. We don’t need to be perfect, we just we need to be present—actively pursuing Christ rather than casually acknowledging Him.

A Test of the Heart

Paul encouraged his readers in 2 Corinthians 13:5 to “examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” This isn’t a call to being self-absorbed but a loving invitation to have spiritual honesty.

Are we walking closely with the Lord?

Are we seeking His voice in Scripture?

Are we praying because we desire Him or simply because it’s what believers are supposed to do?

Are we still being shaped by the Word or slowly reshaped by the world?

These questions aren’t meant to condemn us. They are meant to awaken us.

Lukewarmness does not mean we’ve failed God or are hopeless. It simply means we’re not living in the fullness of the life He offers. It means we’ve settled for half-hearted faith when Jesus invites us into whole-hearted relationship.

The Call Back to the Flame

The beauty of Christ’s words to the church at Laodicea in Revelation 3 is that—even after addressing their lukewarmness—He extends a warm, gracious invitation. Just a few verses later, He says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”

What a picture of mercy. The God who deserves our full devotion still comes after us when we lose our way.

If lukewarmness has crept into your life, there’s no need to hide it. Bring it into the light. Jesus never ridicules our weariness; He rekindles it. He doesn’t despise our weakness; He strengthens it. He never rejects the believer whose fire has dimmed; He breathes life back into the flame.

The remedy to lukewarm living is not trying harder—it’s returning sooner.

Return to Scripture with an open heart.

Return to prayer with honest words.

Return to worship with a spirit ready to be renewed.

Return to fellowship with believers who will walk beside you.

Return to the presence of the One who never stopped pursuing you.

Why It Matters Now

We live in a time when truth is challenged, biblical conviction is mocked, and faith is often treated as optional or outdated. Yet this is the very moment when God calls His people to be steadfast—loving, humble, courageous, and unashamed. Not abrasive. Not angry. Not afraid. Simply faithful.

Christ isn’t demanding us to be flawless—He’s urging us to be passionate. To resist the drift. To choose a faith that burns. To step away from lukewarm living and step into a life shaped by Scripture, fueled by the Spirit, and anchored in Christ.

Because when our hearts are set on fire for Him, everything changes—our joy, our purpose, our relationships, our witness, and our world.

Let us be the people who rekindle the flame.

Let us be the salt that seasons and preserves.

Let us be the believers who endure sound doctrine with glad hearts.

And above all, let us be the disciples who choose heat over lukewarm, passion over passivity, and devotion over drifting.

Lord, warm our hearts again.

May God continuously lead your path
