Awakening – Spiritual Slumber
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” Ephesians 5:14 (ESV)
Every day the headlines scream at us that something in the world seems “off” – it sometimes feels like the world is sleepwalking and stumbling into a time of confusion and chaos.
In today’s changing world, it’s easy for the Church to become complacent to the world around it, lulled into a state of spiritual slumber by the distractions and demands of modern life. Just as ancient Israel often drifted from God’s original plan, so too can the modern Church lose sight of its divine calling.
This week, let’s explore the need for the Church to awaken from its slumber, renew its commitment to God’s Word, and remember Jesus’ call on our lives.
Spiritual Slumber – An Age-old Problem
Both the Old and the New Testaments offer examples of Israel, God’s chosen people, drifting away from Him, only to be reminded and called back to repentance.
In the book of Hosea, God speaks through the prophet, saying, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6, ESV). Israel had forgotten the laws and teachings that set them apart, pursuing false gods and practices that led them astray.
Similarly, today’s Church sometimes gets distracted or even seduced by societal norms, cultural pressures, and personal ambitions, leading to a loss of spiritual fervor.
The Allure of False Idols
Just as Israel was drawn to the idols of surrounding nations, the modern Church can be tempted by false idols.
These idols may not be made of wood, stone, or gold like the idols of Biblical times, but they can be just as dangerous. Wealth, power, success, and even the pursuit of comfort can become idols distracting us from our true purpose.
The Apostle Paul warns against this in his letter to the Romans: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2, ESV).
The Church is called to stand apart from the world, to live by God’s standards rather than society’s shifting values. Yet, how often do we find ourselves conforming to the patterns of this world, seeking approval and validation from sources other than God?
Awakening Through Scripture
Scripture is the foundation of our Faith. To awaken spiritually, it helps to immerse ourselves in God’s Word, allowing it to transform and renew us. Psalm 119:105 (ESV)reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”. God’s Word illuminates our journey, guiding us through the challenges and complexities of life.
Consider the example of Nehemiah, who led the Israelites in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. In Nehemiah 8, the people gathered to hear the reading of the Law, and as they listened, they were moved to repentance and worship. The rediscovery of God’s Word ignited a spiritual awakening among the people, reminding them of their identity and purpose.
Awakening Today
We can see modern examples of spiritual awakening in various parts of the world. The underground churches in China, for instance, are experiencing significant growth as believers gather in secret to study God’s Word and worship together.
In Western countries, where freedom of religion is often taken for granted, there is a growing recognition of the need for spiritual renewal. Churches are beginning to emphasize the importance of discipleship, community, and living out the Gospel in practical ways.
Five Steps
To awaken the Church and revitalize our faith, here are five practical steps that align with God’s Word and His calling on our lives:
- Prioritize Prayer and Worship: Prayer is the lifeline of the Church. As we connect with God through prayer, we align our hearts with His will and invite His presence into our lives. Regular worship gatherings and personal worship times help us focus on God’s greatness and renew our love for Him.
- Engage with Scripture: Dedicate time to studying and meditating on God’s Word. Join Bible study groups or engage in personal devotions that challenge and inspire you. Invite Scripture to shape your beliefs, values, and actions.
- Cultivate Authentic Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage and challenge you in your faith journey. Authentic community provides accountability, support, and opportunities for growth.
- Serve with Compassion: As Jesus teaches us, look for ways to meet the needs of those around you, both within and outside the Church. Acts of service reflect Christ’s love and draw others to Him.
- Share the Gospel Boldly: The Great Commission calls us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Share the Gospel with boldness and humility, trusting that God will work through your words and actions to draw others to Himself.
Our Call
The call to awaken is a call to return to our roots, to rediscover the power and truth of God’s Word, and to live out our faith with passion and purpose. As the Church, we are the body of Christ, called to be His hands and feet in a world desperate for hope and redemption.
May we awaken from our spiritual slumber and embrace the call to live as Christ’s ambassadors in a world in need of His transformative love!
May God continuously lead your path
