Radical Mission

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Matthew 16:24-25 (ESV)

Have you ever noticed how carefully Jesus chose some of the final words He shared with His disciples?

Standing on a mountain in Galilee, with the wind pressing in from the sea, He didn’t give His disciples a gentle suggestion or a polite invitation.

He gave them a commission—a radical mission that would redefine both the rest of their lives and all of history: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… and behold, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19–20).

Those words were spoken into a world where Rome ruled with an iron fist – filled with political pressure, spiritual confusion, corruption, and violence. Yet they were spoken with confidence, because Jesus knew the mission wasn’t powered by human strength but by His eternal presence.

This same commission, and the same power, has been handed to us.

Jesus never promised that His mission would be safe, comfortable, financially lucrative, or easy. He promised it would be victorious.

He didn’t promise applause. He promised His presence.

He didn’t promise cultural approval. He promised eternal authority: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” (Matthew 28:18).

Before sending His disciples into a hostile world, Jesus reminded them that every empire, every ideology, every government, and every cultural force ultimately stands beneath His sovereignty.

His disciples didn’t carry the gospel into the world hoping it might survive. They carried it knowing it could not be defeated (Romans 8:31).

The Great Commission Today

Today’s world looks a lot different than in Jesus’ day—smartphones, satellites, social media, digital news feeds—but spiritually, little has changed.

We live in a time when traditional Christian beliefs are often laughed at as outdated, bigoted, or unintelligent. Faithfulness to Scripture can cost someone their reputation, their career, or even their friendships.

In some regions of the world, it costs believers their freedom, their homes, and sometimes their lives.

The martyrdom of Christians in places like Nigeria, India, North Korea, and parts of the Middle East reminds us that the Great Commission remains as risky and radical today as it was two thousand years ago.

And yet, millions continue following Christ boldly—not because it’s easy, but because it’s true.

The Look of Discipleship

Following Christ boldly in today’s world requires relentless perseverance. It means resisting the temptation to retreat into silence when the world mocks us for speaking biblical truth.

It means choosing integrity when compromise or “other” ways would be easier.

It means speaking with boldness, but also with humility, patience, and love—because the Great Commission isn’t a call to win arguments, it’s a call to win hearts (2 Timothy 2:23-26).

For some believers, obedience looks like sharing Jesus with a coworker who has drifted into despair. For others, it means raising children to love Scripture in a culture that rejects it. For many around the world, obedience looks like gathering quietly in house churches, memorizing Scripture in secret, or whispering prayers behind closed doors.

The shape of obedience changes with circumstance, but the essence of the mission is always the same: proclaim Christ, make disciples, teach truth, and trust His presence.

Our Call

Christ’s presence is the hinge on which His entire mission swings. Jesus never sends us out alone. He doesn’t watch from a distance as we struggle, sending us “prayers and thoughts”.

He walks into every conversation, every challenge, every hostile environment with us (Joshua 1:9). When we’re afraid, Jesus strengthens us. When we experience rejection, He comforts. When we’re weary, He renews. When we risk our reputation—or our life—He holds our future in His hands.

Christians overcome not because we’re naturally bold, but because the Holy Spirit transforms ordinary people into courageous witnesses (Acts 4:31).

The apostles weren’t fearless superheroes. They were fishermen, tax collectors, doubters, and sinners—yet through the presence of Christ, they turned the world upside down.

That same Spirit is at work in every believer today.

So, stand firm. Speak truth. Love deeply. Live boldly.

And remember that our mission doesn’t succeed based on cultural acceptance. Christianity was born in the fires of opposition, and it has always shined brightest in the darkest places.

The Great Commission is still radical. Still costly. Still world-changing. And still the calling of every follower of Christ.

May God continuously lead your path
